Total Petrochemicals & Refining USA said a valve was leaking jet fuel and causing emissions at its refinery in Port Arthur, Texas.

"During a scheduled shutdown at Unit 805, operators blocked in and isolated the unit," the refinery said in a statement to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. "Thermal expansion caused pressure to build at the unit, resulting in a pressure safety valve leaking jet fuel and emitting 147.2 pounds VOCs [volatile organic compounds] to atmosphere in a 30-minute period."

The refinery said the incident happened Monday afternoon, and that when the leak was discovered, an exclusion zone was called for the unit.

The 225,000-barrel-a-day refinery is located east of Houston.
