Total Petrochemicals & Refining USA reported the unforeseen
shutdown of a unit due to equipment failure at its refinery in Port
Arthur, Texas.
"Unit 830 unexpectedly shut down (i.e. tripped) due to two
broken gear teeth on a main gear that runs the lube oil pump," the
refinery said in a statement to the Texas Commission on
Environmental Quality. The regulatory filing only identified the
unit by its number.
The statement said the problems also led to emissions that began
Saturday morning and ended an hour later, but said those were only
initial estimates.
The 225,000-barrel-a-day refinery is located east of
Houston.
