Air France-KLM (AF.FR) said Tuesday that its board of directors has approved a firm order for 60 Airbus SE (AIR.FR) A220-300s and the retirement of A380 jets from Air France fleet.

The Franco-Dutch airline said that the order of 60 narrow-body A220-300 planes, with an additional 30 purchase options and 30 acquisition rights, aims to gradually replace Air France's A318 and A319 fleet.

The new planes will fly on short and medium-haul routes and the first aircraft should be delivered in September 2021, Air France-KLM said.

The company's board of directors also agreed on the retirement of the remaining seven A380 planes from Air France fleet by 2022, after the phase out of its three other A380s had already been approved previously.

"The current competitive environment limits the markets in which the A380 can profitably operate," Air France-KLM said.

The company is studying possible replacement options of the A380s by new generation aircraft, it said.
