Aviation company Airbus SE has appealed to governments in Europe to rely on testing rather than quarantine to combat the coronavirus among airline passengers.

Chief Executive Guillaume Faury said Monday that the move could help prevent insolvencies which would threaten the industry with long-term damage. The closing and opening of borders, as well as the introduction and removal of quarantine rules has unsettled airline customers and harmed the industry, he said at an event organized by the CDU political party in Berlin.

Furthermore, Mr. Fehry said rapid coronavirus tests would be a better way of containing the virus than mandatory quarantine.

He expects air traffic to return to pre-crisis levels in three years in the best case scenario, and in five years in the worst-case scenario. Domestic flights may slowly recover in the coming months, but European or international flights will remain at a very low level for much longer, Mr. Faury added.
