Airbus SE said Tuesday that it has launched an air-cargo service that will use its fleet of Beluga aircraft to transport outsized freight.

The new "Airbus Beluga Transport" service will progressively operate Airbus's five BelugaST--which have a maximum payload of 40 tons and were used until now for the inter-site transportation of large aircraft parts--to carry outsize loads for customers in sectors such as energy, space and military, the European plane maker said.

Its whale-shaped BelugaST airliners will be replaced by a fleet of six new-generation BelugaXLs with a capacity of 44 tons that will "support Airbus's ramp-up of its airliner production," it said.

"In the near future, once Airbus has commissioned all six new BelugaXLs, the fully-released BelugaST fleet will be handed over to a newly-created, subsidiary airline with its own Air Operator Certificate (AOC) and staff," Airbus said.
