Electricite de France SA (EDF.FR) and Veolia Environnement SA (VIE.FR) said Tuesday that they will create a join entity to decommission nuclear reactors that incorporate graphite technology.

The companies said "Graphitech," which will be created through their respective subsidiaries Cyclife Holding and Asteralis, will be responsible for developing tools and design systems required to decommission around 60 nuclear reactors that use graphite technology worldwide.

"Dismantling graphite reactors is complex, due to their design and the volume of material to be removed. Worldwide, just two small-scale graphite reactors have been decommissioned to date." EDF and Veolia said.

The new entity's first goal will be to decommission the Chinon A2 reactor in 2028. The program will begin in 2022, and the feedback from the operation will be used for other reactors in France and around the world.
