Engie SA (ENGI.FR) has been ordered to pay a fine of nearly 900,000 euros ($1 million) for abusive marketing practices, the French competition and consumer authority said Friday.

According to the General Directorate for Competition Policy, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Control, the French utility company entered into energy-supply contracts without confirmation of the offer being sent to consumers by letter or email, and it failed to take appropriate action in response to consumers' request to exercise their right of withdrawal.

The French regulator conducted an investigation into Engie's activities between June 2017 and February 2019, following several complaints.
