London Stocks Fall Sharply; Prudential Slides

0807 GMT - The FTSE 100 falls sharply to a two-month low, with the index last down 1.3% at 6875.13, tracking falls in Asian stocks due to concerns about increased regulation in China while worries persist about rising inflation and slow growth. Stock investors are nervous before a U.S. Federal Reserve policy announcement Wednesday, where the central bank will likely say something about plans to taper asset purchases, as well as a Bank of England announcement Thursday. "Rattled investors are currently succumbing to risk aversion, as a series of concerns weighs on sentiment," says Richard Hunter, head of markets at Interactive Investor. Financial stocks, miners, and travel and leisure stocks are among the main fallers. Prudential slides 7.1% after announcing plans to raise funds, while Asia-focused bank Standard Chartered loses 4.1%. (jessica.fleetham@wsj.com)
