Ingevity Corp. (NGVT) is suing German chemical companies BASF SE (BASFY) and Mahle GmbH's U.S. businesses, alleging patent violations.

In civil complaints filed Thursday in federal court, the South Carolina company accused BASF Corp., BASF's largest affiliate in North America, and Mahle's subsidiary Mahle Filter Systems North America Inc. of violating a vapor emission control technology patent by developing and marketing a product that would compete with its "honeycomb" technology.

A spokesman for BASF said the company intends to challenge the claims.

"BASF respects other parties' intellectual property rights and ensures that its products do not infringe on these rights," said Cesar F. Garcia, the spokesman.

Representatives for Mahle couldn't be reached for comment.

Patent No. RE38,844, which covers certain canister systems designed to achieve gasoline vapor emission levels that comply with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Tier 3 and California LEV III regulations, expires in March 2022.

"Our leadership and expertise in this application are unique and it's incumbent upon us to defend our innovations against infringement - including premature development activity," Ingevity Chief Executive Michael Wilson said in a statement.

Ingevity, which has a market capitalization of nearly $4 billion, was spun off in 2016 from WestRock Co. (WRK).
