PARIS--Boeing Co. (BA) should go ahead and commit to building a new mid-market plane it has been evaluating, the head of JetBlue Airways (JBLU) said Friday.

Boeing has debated launching a replacement for the out-of-production 757 that would be larger than the 737 single-aisle jet but smaller than the 787 Dreamliner. The company has said it hopes to launch formal discussions with airlines this year and decide next year whether to build the plane that would enter services around 2025.

JetBlue CEO Robin Hayes said "Boeing should get on and do it." The aircraft would fill a market gap, he added at the Paris Air Forum.

JetBlue this year announced it would start trans-Atlantic service in a few years between the U.S. and London. JetBlue plans to use the Airbus SE A321LR--a long-range narrowbody--for that role.

Bjorn Kjos, chief executive of Norwegian Air Shuttle ASA, said he remains interested in the Boeing plane. "It boils down to the cost."
