Kering's (KER.FR) fashion houses will only work with models aged 18 or above starting in 2020, the French luxury group said Wednesday.

The company, which owns brands including Gucci and Balenciaga, made the decision in part due to the influence that models have on younger generations, Kering Chief Executive Francois-Henri Pinault said.

"We hope to create a movement that will encourage others to follow suit," Mr. Pinault said.

The physiological and psychological maturity of models aged 18 or above is also more appropriate to the profession, said Marie-Claire Daveu, chief sustainability officer and head of international institutional affairs at Kering.

"We are also aware of the role-model element that images produced by our houses can represent for certain groups of people," Ms. Daveu said.

In September 2017, Kering and LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton SE (MC.FR), the parent of Dior and Givenchy, drew up a set of standards for their models, including an age requirement of 16.

LVMH didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
