Telecom Italia SpA said late Friday that it would appeal a decision from the Italian Competition Authority imposing a fine of around 116 million euros ($130.8 million) in a fiber-development case in Italy.

The Italian Competition Authority sanctioned Telecom Italia after ascertaining that it engaged in anticompetitive practices which delayed the development of fiber infrastructure in some parts of the country.

Telecom Italia said the case is related to an investment project which the Italian Competition Authority considered "abusive" toward wholesale operator Open Fiber--a 50:50 joint venture between Enel SpA and Italian state lender Cassa Depositi e Prestiti--which should have delivered fiber infrastructure in certain areas using public funds.
