Thales SA (HO.FR) said Wednesday that it signed a 250 million Australian dollar ($171 million) contract with Hong Kong-based MTR Corp. Ltd. (0066.HK) to expand the Sydney Metro.

The French aerospace-and-defense company said it will design and supply the central control and communication systems for the Sydney Metro on the City & Southwest extension project.

The project, which is an extension of the Sydney Metro North West, will include an additional 66 kilometers (41 miles) of rail and 31 metro stations from Chatswood, under Sydney Harbour and through Sydney's central business district to Sydenham, Thales said.
