Volkswagen AG said Wednesday that it expects semiconductor shortages to remain challenging during the first half of 2022 and potentially beyond.

The German car maker said it is continuing to work with semiconductor manufacturers and suppliers to minimize the impact of the chip shortage on its production and mitigate supply bottlenecks.

For the entire year 2022 overall, the auto maker expects the supply of chips to progressively recover and vehicle production at its plants to stabilize.

"We anticipate a slight improvement in the supply of semiconductors for the year as a whole versus 2021," said Murat Aksel, management board member for procurement.
