Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena SpA said late on Tuesday that
media reports citing a potential capital injection of 3.5 billion
euros ($3.98 billion) sought by the lender "have no basis in any
initiative undertaken by the bank."
Earlier on Tuesday, Bloomberg reported that the Italian bank
could seek a capital injection of about EUR1 billion more than
estimated in December, citing sources familiar with the matter. The
news outlet said that the Italian treasury considers the amount as
necessary to comply with capital regulations set by the European
Central Bank.
