U.S. regulators have opened an investigation into Tesla Inc.'s Model Y SUV over two complaints that said the car's steering wheel had detached.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the probe affects more than an estimated 120,000 model-year 2023 vehicles.

The NHTSA said in both complaints it received, the Model Y vehicles were delivered to the owners without the retaining bolt, which attaches the steering wheel to the steering column. The agency said both incidents happened at low vehicle mileage.

The NHTSA said it has opened a preliminary evaluation to assess the scope, frequency and manufacturing processes associated with the condition.

Shares of Tesla fell about 1.6% to $184.76 in the premarket session.
