China Airlines Ltd. has finalized an order with Boeing Co. for up to 24 of 787 Dreamliners as part of the company's sustainability goals.

The deal includes an order for 16 of Boeing's 787-9 aircraft, plus options for eight additional jets, the companies said Wednesday.

China Airlines Chairman Hsieh Su-Chien said the new airplanes will help the airline reduce carbon emissions as it upgrades its fleet with more fuel-efficient aircraft. It is estimated that the new models will cut fuel use and carbon emissions by up to 25% for China Airlines.

The airline now has 22 Boeing jets on order, including six 777 Freighters.
