BorgWarner and Audi Also Break New Ground with Sporty Diesel TT AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Sept. 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- BorgWarner (NYSE: BWA) supplies turbochargers and timing drive systems for the Audi TT RS featuring an entirely new 2.5-liter five-cylinder inline gasoline engine. BorgWarner's expertise in turbocharging and timing drive systems, in combination with direct injection, delivers powerful performance - catapulting the coupe from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 4.6 seconds - while achieving fuel economy of 25.5 mpg (9.2 liters/100 km). (Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20090902/DE69203 ) "As the first to combine gasoline direct injection with turbocharging in volume production years ago, Audi is once again setting new standards in performance and driving excitement," said Tim Manganello, BorgWarner Chairman and CEO. "BorgWarner is pleased to contribute our advanced technologies to these powerful new engines." For the new 2.5-liter gasoline engine, BorgWarner's turbocharging experts worked with the Audi quattro team to address the dual challenges of developing a turbocharger with special geometry and low weight. By adapting the manifold and turbine cross-sections and employing a relatively large compressor impeller, engineers achieved high efficiencies over a wide operating range with constant high pressure levels and excellent thermodynamic values in the mid-speed range. The timing drive system produced by BorgWarner accommodates the increased loads caused by turbocharged engines and, at the same time, ensures superior chain wear performance with less noise. BorgWarner and Audi also broke new ground in the sports car segment with the new 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel TT. The 170 horsepower engine features BorgWarner's third-generation variable turbine geometry (VTG) turbocharging technology, which considerably enhances torque. With fuel consumption of 42.8 mpg (5.5 liters/100 km), the engine easily complies with the Euro 5 emissions standard. BorgWarner Turbo & Emissions Systems is a leading global producer of turbochargers, exhaust gas recirculation valves and other engine air management systems for passenger cars, light trucks and commercial vehicles. These systems are designed to improve fuel economy, reduce emissions and enhance vehicle performance. BorgWarner Morse TEC is a leading global designer and producer of engine timing systems that are quiet, durable, precise and cost effective. Engines equipped with BorgWarner variable cam timing (VCT) technology operate independently of oil pressure to deliver more horsepower, better performance, and improved fuel economy over traditional cam phasing devices in the marketplace today. HY-VO chain systems, which are available for front wheel drive transmissions, 4WD transfer cases and hybrid power drives, transmit power between shafts efficiently, quietly and economically with considerable weight savings over gear technology.
