BorgWarner Announces First North American Application of
Intelligent Torque Management System CHICAGO, July 13
/PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- BorgWarner TorqTransfer Systems's
patented Interactive Torque Management I system (ITM-I(TM)) will
provide maximum performance and enhanced security through on-demand
four-wheel drive for a major North American OEM's popular
front-wheel drive-based sport wagon, beginning in 2006. "This first
ITM(TM) application with a traditional North American manufacturer
illustrates the continuing trend toward blending the functionality
of all-wheel drive with the ride, handling and fuel economy of car
platforms," said Tim Manganello, BorgWarner Chairman and CEO. "We
are proud to contribute significantly to the exceptional driving
experience that our customers, and the people who buy their
vehicles, are seeking." Manganello said the automaker in this case
expects a 60% installation rate for the all-wheel drive ITM(TM)
system. The BorgWarner ITM(TM) system debuted in 2002 on the
Hyundai Santa Fe. The patented BorgWarner InterActive Torque
Management(TM) system uses electronic sensors and microcomputer
controls to sense slippage in a vehicle's front wheels and
automatically transfers power to the rear wheels. Then, when the
front wheels are no longer slipping, the system reduces or
eliminates power to the rear wheels. This provides efficiencies
that enhance vehicle handling and traction and improve fuel
economy. In addition, because ITM-I(TM) is fully interactive, it
can work with other systems such as anti- lock brake systems and
electronic stability programs to further enhance traction and
stability. And, because it is an integrated, self-contained system,
it provides greater reliability and durability while lowering
weight and cost. It also provides flexible packaging and is
scalable for a variety of applications. As a complete torque
management system integrator, BorgWarner TorqTransfer Systems
developed and supplies the ITM(TM) hardware, control strategy and
the electronic control unit. BorgWarner TorqTransfer Systems is a
leading global designer and producer of transfer cases and systems
for four-wheel and all-wheel drive vehicles for the sport-utility
and light truck markets. Its systems enhance vehicle stability,
security and drivability. BorgWarner Inc. (NYSE:BWA) is a product
