Educators' Children Awarded $50,000 in Horace Mann's Scholarship Program SPRINGFIELD, Ill., April 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Horace Mann Educators Corporation (NYSE:HMN) awarded $50,000 in college scholarships to 12 high school seniors who are the children of U.S. public or private education employees. Lyndsey Adams of Moore, South Carolina, was named the program's 2005 Scholar. Adams, a senior at Dorman High School in Roebuck, South Carolina will receive a $15,000 scholarship to the college of her choice. Jessica Bushman of Olympia, Washington, a senior at Timberline High School in Lacey, Washington, was the runner-up. She will receive a $10,000 scholarship. In addition, the program recognized 10 other students for their educational achievements by awarding them a one-time $2,500 scholarship. They are: -- James Akins, Las Vegas, Nev. (Las Vegas Academy) -- Julie Aiken, Falcon Heights, Minn. (Concordia Academy) -- Shawn Furlong, Grove City, Ohio (Grove City High School) -- Lamar Harrington, Lincoln, Neb. (Lincoln Northeast High School) -- David King, Indianapolis, Ind. (Ben Davis High School) -- Lisa Muscanell, Glastonbury, Conn. (Glastonbury High School) -- Erika Montanaro, Mesa, Ariz. (Westwood High School) -- Stefan Nickells, Trophy Club, Tex. (Northwest High School) -- Qimat Sindy, Nashville, Tenn. (Glencliff High School) -- Jonathan Tanner, Zion, Ill. (Zion-Benton Township High School) The Horace Mann Scholarship program has awarded more than $550,000 to help children of school employees since 1992. To be eligible, applicants had to be a college-bound high school senior whose parent or legal guardian is a U.S. public or private school or college employee. Additionally, students are required to have an overall grade point average equivalent to at least a "B" and answer an essay question. This year's essay question focused on the future of education.
