United Parcel Service Inc. has agreed to provide unionized workers up to 10 days of paid leave if they are directly impacted by the new coronavirus, according to a copy of the agreement reviewed by The Wall Street Journal.

The agreement with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters covers nearly 300,000 full and part-time workers, including drivers, package handlers and mechanics. The new leave policy was agreed to on Wednesday and is in effect until the national emergency is lifted.

It applies to workers who either are diagnosed with the virus or who are required to be quarantined by a public health official, doctor or the company. Workers whose household members are diagnosed with the virus and are required to be quarantined will also be allowed to collect the paid leave.

Employees must provide proof of their diagnosis or requirement to quarantine. UPS and Teamsters leaders have agreed to keep meeting to discuss any other changes that need to be made as the response to the pandemic evolves.
