BorgWarner's VTG Turbochargers Offer Lower Emissions, Better Fuel
Economy AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Aug. 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --
BorgWarner was chosen to supply variable turbine geometry (VTG)
turbochargers to boost John Deere Power Systems Interim Tier
4/Stage III B PowerTech(TM) PVX and PowerTech(TM) PSX 4.5L, 6.8L
and 13.5L diesel engines for agricultural, construction, forestry
and OEM applications. BorgWarner's turbocharging technology helps
these new industrial engines meet stringent Interim Tier 4/Stage
III B regulations for off-highway applications. These regulations
require up to a 50% reduction in nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions
compared with previous standards. (Photo:

VTG turbochargers are the first to prove their reliability under
the extreme vibration, temperature and duty cycles of off-highway
conditions while meeting next-level emissions standards and
achieving best-in-class fuel economy," said Roger Wood, President
and General Manager, BorgWarner Turbo & Emissions Systems. "We
are pleased to work with John Deere Power Systems to develop
solutions for Interim Tier 4 emissions standards." Beginning with
the development of Tier 3 and continuing with Interim Tier 4
compliant engines, John Deere Power Systems worked with BorgWarner
Turbo & Emissions Systems to pioneer the use of cooled exhaust
gas recirculation (EGR) and VTG turbocharging technology in
off-highway engines. With cooled EGR, exhaust gasses are cooled and
introduced back into the fresh air stream to reduce NOx emissions.
Compared with other turbo technologies, VTG turbochargers more
accurately control EGR flow by precisely opening and closing guide
vanes to balance the exhaust pressure to intake pressure.
BorgWarner commercial diesel VTG turbochargers have been
specifically engineered to withstand the extreme environment and
duty cycles commonly seen in off-highway applications. Beginning
with Interim Tier 4 compliant engines, BorgWarner VTG turbochargers
will feature BorgWarner's own compact brushless actuator
specifically designed for use in heavy-duty turbochargers and EGR
valves. BorgWarner's VTG turbocharging technology enabled John
Deere Power Systems to achieve record fuel economy improvements in
Tier 3 models over Tier 2/Stage II models, even in the most severe
operating environments. Powered by the PowerTech Plus 9.0L engine,
featuring BorgWarner's BV70 model VTG turbocharger, the John Deere
8430 tractor achieved an 8.8% improvement in fuel economy, making
it the most fuel efficient row crop tractor ever tested by the
Nebraska Tractor Test Lab. BorgWarner Turbo & Emissions Systems
is a leading global producer of turbochargers, exhaust gas
recirculation valves and other engine air management systems for
passenger cars, light trucks and commercial vehicles. These systems
are designed to improve fuel economy, reduce emissions and enhance
vehicle performance. Auburn Hills, Michigan-based BorgWarner Inc.
(NYSE:BWA) is a product leader in highly engineered components and

stringent new emissions regulations while improving fuel economy.
