UPS's decision to buy 170 million gallon equivalents of renewable natural gas by 2026 has a clear positive environmental impact. Biogas is a zero-emission fuel produced from bio sources at wastewater treatment facilities, landfills and dairy farms, which helps them with waste management. Not only will this contribute to UPS' goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions of its ground fleet, set at 12% by 2025, but it will also reduce methane emissions from buried waste, 25 times more polluting than carbon dioxide. Biogas, however, has a higher production cost than regular gas. To counterbalance the price, the government provides incentives for companies to buy renewable fuels. (stela.zarija@dowjones.com)
