Montana Campaign for I-147 Files 'Friend of the Court' Response
GOLDEN, Colo., Aug. 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Canyon Resources
Corporation (AMEX:CAU), a Colorado-based mining company, passes the
press release issued by the I-147 campaign organization (Miners,
Merchants and Montanans for Jobs and Economic Opportunity FOR
I-147) on to its shareholders and the general marketplace. The
complete text of the release, issued August 13, 2004, is provided
below: HELENA -- The campaign for a mining reform ballot initiative
has filed a "Friend of the Court" brief in response to an effort by
a Helena environmental group to prohibit Montana citizens from
voting on the measure. "The people of Montana have made it
abundantly clear that they want the opportunity to vote on
Initiative 147," said Tammy Johnson, campaign manager for Miners,
Merchants and Montanans for Jobs and Economic Opportunity, FOR
I-147. "It's sad that the Environmental Information Center (EIC)
wants to deny them that right." Last month, the EIC filed a lawsuit
to keep I-147 off the ballot, claiming that the measure is
unconstitutional. The EIC lawsuit was filed against Montana's
Attorney General Mike McGrath and Secretary of State Bob Brown,
both of whom reviewed the initiative and determined it was proper
to be put before the voters. The Montana Supreme Court has
requested that McGrath and Brown prepare a response to the
petition. The campaign supporting I-147 asked Brown and McGrath if
Miners, Merchants and Montanans would object to the filing of an
Amicus and both officials said they had no objection to the Yes on
I-147 campaign becoming a "Friend of the Court." The campaign's
attorney also asked the EIC's lawyer, Terry Trieweiler, if he would
object to the campaign submitting a brief; Trieweiler said he would
also consent to the filing. "We're joining this effort because we
have a responsibility to the more than 28,000 voters who signed the
petition to put I-147 on the ballot," Johnson said. "Additionally,
we believe the State is on very firm legal footing and that the
EIC's lawsuit is not." DATASOURCE: Canyon Resources Corporation
