Xethanol Corporation (AMEX: XNL), a diversified renewable energy company, today announced that Dr. Thomas Jeffries addressed the Fuel Ethanol Workshop in Nashville, Tennessee this morning to report on his research sponsored by Xethanol. Dr. Jeffries, a Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, conducts research at the Forest Products Laboratory of the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Madison. Dr. Jeffries spoke on fermentation of cellulose and hemicellulose from corn waste. His Xethanol-sponsored research at the Forest Products Lab focuses on the reduction of the net cost of renewable fuel made from wood and agricultural waste. During his presentation, Dr. Jeffries discussed the key advantages of why ethanol produced from agricultural (corn) residues is more energy efficient than ethanol produced from corn grain alone. Key points of his speech discussed the benefits that farmers can realize from this process. For example, residues can be recovered with little additional energy input, and the sale of agricultural residues can provide farmers with additional income. In addition, Dr. Jeffries elaborated on the pretreatments to recover sugars that are becoming available, along with several technologies using sulfuric, sulfurous, or oxalic acids ethanol and other products that can be made from the hemicellulosic sugars. Commercial enzymes are also available to recover sugar from the pretreated residue with cellulases and xylanases release fermentable sugars yielding a total sugar from corn waste approaching 90%. David Ames, Xethanols CEO commented, We are pleased with the progress that Dr. Jeffries and his team are making. Although production of ethanol from cellulosic by-products has been possible for many years, cost efficiently producing ethanol in this manner has been the challenge. Dr. Jeffries work is moving us closer to that goal. Xethanol-sponsored researchers at the Forest Products Lab have developed yeasts that ferment xylose and cellulose to ethanol using a native xylose fermenting yeast that can be employed commercially without environmental concerns, more than doubling the fermentation rate by engineering a single gene. Researchers have also identified more than 10 targets for additional genetic development, and others are being developed for higher value products. Hydrolysate fermentation trials are currently underway, and the process is being evaluated for commercial trials. The Fuel Ethanol Workshop took place at the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center in Nashville. Dr. Jeffries presented on June 18, 2008 at 8:30 a.m. (Central) About the Fuel Ethanol Workshop & Expo The fuel ethanol workshop program agenda is developed by a steering committee of ethanol producers. The committees objective is to help meet the needs and interests of the growing ethanol industry by focusing on issues and topics that improve production and plant operations.
