UNO-E, FIRST SPANISH BANK IN INTERNET,
OBTAINS OFFICIAL LICENSE
Uno-e, first Spanish Internet only Bank, has received Treasury
authorisation, following Bank of Spain's required favourable opinion, for
its launching, foreseen at the beginning of Year 2000.
Uno-e launching is part of BBVA's proactive strategy in expanding its
activity in the Internet World and its objective of consolidating even more its
position as the technological leader in the banking sector.
Uno-e intends to become a reference entity in the Internet environment
through a policy of offering clearly differentiated products and services
from other existing offers in the market.
Uno-e is configurated, initially, as a provider of savings and investment
products (deposits, mutual and pension funds, insurance ... ) and will
give "on line" access to more than ten exchange markets in Europe and the
United States.
Uno-e will have the support of a "call-center" to provide telephoneadvise
to its clients. The new bank will initiate its operations in Spain in the
first months of the year 2000 and forecasts its expansion to other Latin
markets next year.
The new bank will keep full commercial independence from BBVA and will
offer a wide variety of products of Spanish and foreign entities.
Global Strategy
The launching of Uno-e is framed in the global strategy of BBVA for the
expansion of its activities in E-Business.
As a first step, the organisation announced on the day of the merger,
included the creation of a specific area to focus on the development of this
business. This reveals the importance placed by the new group on this business
line, which it intends to develop with great emphasis.
The starting point of the E-Business area is very favourable, as BBVA is the
leader in the Internet banking in Spain, with a market share of 20%, 160,000
active clients and more than 4,5 million transactions per month.
BBVA E-Business strategy is based on three core ideas.
1. The launching of new projects in the Internet environment,
like Uno-e. The BBVA E-Business Area has other "Business to
Business" and "Business to Consumer" projects under study.
2. The strengthening of channels complementary to the branch
network (to offer banking services through Internet (BBV Net and
Argenvia), Digital TV Banking and Mobile Banking (GSM), so that
the client can choose how to operate with BBVA.
3. Strategic investments in the Internet industry, with an initial
investment budget of 300 million euros. The group has participations
in Equality, Pixel and MyAlert.
