SECTION 198 COMPANIES ACT 1985 - DISCLOSURE OF INTEREST IN SHARES

British Steel plc has today received notification from Wellington Management 
Company, LLP ("WMC"), in accordance with Section 198 of the Companies Act 1985
(the "Act"), that on 16 September 1999, WMC held an interest, within the
meaning of Sections 203 and 208 of the Act, in 7,170,065 American Depository
receipts, which represents the ordinary share equivalent of 71,700,650, for a
total of 3.49% of British Steel's issued share capital.

WMC acts as discretionary investment manager to various separate accounts that
hold beneficial interests in British Steel plc.
