                          Annual General Meeting


The  following is extracted from the Chairman's statement made at Debenhams'
Annual General Meeting today.

"We reported on the 17 October 2000 at our Preliminary Results announcement
for  the  year ended 26 August 2000 that we increased market share in  most
sectors and we adapted better to the difficult trading environment  as  the
year  progressed.  We have continued to gain market share  in  the  current
financial year and we are trading in line with our expectations.   However,
the next four weeks are key to our overall trading position."

As planned, we will publish our next trading statement on 16 January 2001."
