                         Appointment of Chief Executive

The Board of Hartford Group plc is pleased to announce that James Kowszun will
be appointed as Chief Executive and to the Board in due course.  Sheila McKenzie
will remain on the Board as an Executive Director and will continue to oversee
the Group's creative development.

James Kowszun, aged 33, will join Hartford from SFI Group plc, where he has been
Finance Director, since the latter's acquisition of Slug and Lettuce in August
2000.  He has agreed to remain with SFI until that company has appointed his
successor.

He was Finance Director of Slug and Lettuce plc from January to August 2000.

He was previously at Bass Breweries Ltd, where he was a member of the strategic
planning team, working on a number of high profile strategic projects - one of
which was the acquisition of Carlsberg-Tetley (eventually blocked by the MMC).

Prior to this he worked at SmithKline Beecham, initially in Group Finance and
latterly in Corporate Development, handling transactions including the
acquisition of Sterling Health and the disposal of the SB Animal Health
Division.

James qualified as an accountant with Arthur Andersen (1992), where he
specialised in Corporate Recovery.
