BioScrip, Inc. (Nasdaq: BIOS) announced today that UnitedHealthcare, a UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH) company, has awarded BioScrip an agreement to serve as one of two national specialty pharmacy providers of HIV/AIDS and Solid Organ Transplant drugs and services to UnitedHealthcare and its participating affiliates. BioScrip expects that it will begin providing these services on August 1, 2007, with the initial term of the agreement running through December 31, 2008. HIV/AIDS In 2005, the United States Center for Disease Control (�CDC�) estimated that there were between 1,039,000 to 1,185,000 people living with HIV/AIDS in the United States, with another 40,000 becoming infected each year. Additionally, a 2006 study estimates an average annual cost of care for a person living with HIV/AIDS to be $25,200, with 2/3 of that, or approximately $16,800, attributable to drug expenditures. Solid Organ Transplantation According to the 2006 OPTN / SRTR Annual Report prepared by the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR) in collaboration with the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) under contract with the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), at the end of 2004, there were 153,245 people living with a functioning transplanted organ (kidney, pancreas, liver, heart, lung, intestine and heart-lung) in the United States. Additionally, in 2005, there were over 27,527 organs transplanted. Costs for post-transplant immunosuppressant drugs can exceed $13,000 annually, accordingly to a 2007 report.
