Intellon Corporation (Nasdaq:ITLN), a leading provider of HomePlug®-compatible integrated circuits (ICs) for home networking, networked entertainment, Ethernet-over-Coax (EoC) and smart grid applications, announced that LinkSprite Technologies, Inc., a provider of powerline (PLC) and wireless (RF) communication technology, is using Intellon HomePlug-based powerline technology in a transceiver motherboard module that will connect UART-ported products to a powerline network. The motherboard transceiver has a socket for optional daughter boards to connect devices with RS232, RS485, USB, Ethernet and ZigBee interfaces and features a repeater function that extends coverage and supports mesh networks.

LinkSprite modules make it simple and convenient to connect multiple serial port devices – even with different interfaces – over existing AC or DC electrical wiring. The module simulates the various types of serial cables and, instead, connects these devices over the power cord, allowing interconnection without installation of new wiring.

The LinkSprite module line-up is especially well-suited for smart grid and industrial systems, such as automated meter reading, industrial automation, scientific analysis, fire and smoke alarm, low-latency servo control, telemetry and instrumentation. Serial port device types number in the thousands and include products such as: remote terminal units, meters, barcode scanners, gas pumps, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, cash registers, terminals, and similar asynchronous devices.

“The LinkSprite modules enable low-cost, easily set-up networks for all types of smart grid and industrial devices that have serial rather than Ethernet ports,” said Rick Furtney, president and COO of Intellon Corporation. “We’re pleased that LinkSprite has selected our technology for these innovative new modules.”

“LinkSprite’s goal is to create an open, interoperable, standardized solution for smart energy management and we selected Intellon because of their leadership in HomePlug-based IC technology,” said Howard Song, president, LinkSprite. “Our teams moved very quickly to develop this technology for a full range of products in our portfolio and we are happy to have the support of Intellon for our HomePlug-based products.”

LinkSprite, with headquarters and sales/marketing business operations in Colorado and manufacturing operations in China, offers both narrow-band PLC-UART and broad-band PLC-UART boards (with 2mm spacing and 20-pin slot), along with a variety of daughter boards that include the UART-RS232, UART-RS485, UART-USB, UART-ZigBee and UART-Ethernet. The company also offers an evaluation kit that can be ordered online at www.linksprite.com.
