The Science Center of Pinellas County has teamed up with Raytheon,
SRI International, and St. Petersburg College to create an
innovative cyber security educational program.
Why: According to the recently appointed
White House Cyber Security Chief Howard A. Schmidt, "In our digital
world the information technologies we depend upon everyday present
us with great opportunity and great danger -- for our national
security, public safety and our economic competitiveness, as well
as our personal privacy. Our lives have been enriched in countless
ways by technologies that are now a part of the very fabric of our
day to day lives. Our dependence on these wonderful technologies
continues to increase with each new innovation, as does our shared
responsibility to protect our security and our privacy. Indeed as
President Obama has said, 'this cyber threat represents one of the
most serious economic and national security challenges we face as a
nation.'"
Our Goal: Prepare students for careers in
national defense, the protection of corporate and civilian cyber
networks, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math)
education -- and successful career placement with the best
companies
Our "real-world" learning methodology is uniquely differentiated
by a blend of academic and practical experience, including
mentoring by industry experts; in-depth studies of STEM (Science,
Technology, Engineering, and Math) principles; and the use of
e-learning tools that include threat simulation and attack,
counter-attack gaming, and hands-on components. The program
provides students with a foundation in cyber security and ethics,
protocols, operating systems, software, network management,
security procedures, how to harden networks, and much more. The
program's goal is to prepare students to successfully test for
several industry certifications. The fifteen week-long educational
program will be available October 11, 2010. Targeted for adults who
desire either new skills or enhancement of existing computer
technology training, this program will prepare graduates for
careers in a critical high-growth industry. Students who complete
the full Science Center Cyber Security Educational Program will
qualify for credits towards a two or four-year degree in Network
Security from St. Petersburg College. The Science Center's CIO, a
former Department Chair at the National Defense University, and
other certified specialists will facilitate the program. These
industry experts will mentor students in the fundamental aspects of
STEM in a blended learning model -- providing students with
critically needed job skills. The course is comprised of 60 hours
of instructor facilitation and 180 hours of additional course
content. It has been supported with content by the Department of
Defense and the Air Force Association.
A partnership with the Career Technical Education Foundation
(CTEF) and Kelly Services® will provide qualified students with
internships and career placement. This innovative and successful
placement model has been employed with engineering students and
will now be expanded to cyber security specialists through this
partnership with the Science Center of Pinellas. Kelly IT Resources
and Kelly Engineering Resources, specialty services of Kelly
Services, will assist with recruiting students for the program and
with job placement services for program graduates.
"Kelly Services is excited for the opportunity to work with the
Science Center of Pinellas County and CTEF on this important
national imperative," said Melisa Bockrath, Sr. Director and IT
Product Leader at Kelly Services. "With designated IT and
Engineering business leads, Kelly can assist in promoting STEM
education and mentoring in the greater Tampa Bay market and job
placement of qualified candidates across the United States."
One of goals of Kelly Services in partnership with CTEF and the
Science Center of Pinellas County is to help this program grow into
a national adult education system where individuals can learn new
skills and advance their careers in this dynamic field.
