NetDay's 2004 Survey Results Show 58 Percent of Students Have Cell
Phones, 60 Percent Email or IM Adults on a Weekly Basis ATLANTA,
March 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Preliminary findings released today by
NetDay reveal students' insights into the technologies they are
using both personally and educationally. More than 167,000 K-12
students participated in the nationwide Speak Up Day for Students
2004, with support from BellSouth (NYSE:BLS) and Advanced Network
& Services, Inc. The Speak Up Day 2004 data shows technology
has become an indispensable tool in the education of today's
students. The survey reveals important new information about the
ways students are communicating using cell phones, email and
instant messaging. 2004 data highlights (from data set of grades
6-12) - 58 percent of students have a cell phone and 68 percent of
those students bring their cell phone to school - 21 percent of
those school-bound cell phones have text and video/photo
capabilities - 81 percent of students have at least one email
account - 75 percent have at least one instant messaging (IM)
screen name - 60 percent e-mail or IM people other than friends on
a weekly basis. (69 percent to parents and family members, 24
percent to teachers and coaches and four percent to religious
leaders) - 62 percent turn to technology solutions first when
writing a report The 2004 Speak Up Day survey included new
questions on plagiarism and bullying, and even though 66 percent of
students say their teachers have talked to them about plagiarism,
35 percent know someone who's cheated online. In addition, this
year's findings revealed that 31 percent of students say they have
(or someone they know has) been bullied or harassed by another
student online. "Over the past two years, the impact of NetDay's
Speak Up Day projects has been phenomenal," said Julie Evans,
NetDay CEO. "The 2003 Speak Up Day survey involved 210,000 students
whose opinions influenced the development of federal education
policy as they let their voices be heard and shared their ideas
with NetDay. Today, states and schools all across the United States
are using the Speak Up Day data to revisit technology programs and
budgets -- and they are listening to their primary customers, the
students, with a new vigor and intensity. The 2004 data continues
to explore new areas of interest to students and provides our
education community with more data upon which to improve education
for all students." "At the completion of each survey, I am amazed
at the new insights revealed," said Kim Mulkey, technology
director, BellSouth Foundation. "It reinforces to me that we need
to keep on asking students how they view technology in their
learning." ABOUT NETDAY The mission of NetDay, a national education
