Cingular Wireless Invests $200 Million in Greater Philadelphia
Network Turning on 140 New Cell Sites in 2005 KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa.,
Aug. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Cingular Wireless, the country's largest
wireless provider, today announced it will invest more than $200
million this year in the Greater Philadelphia area - including
turning on-air approximately 140 new cell sites. Nationwide, the
company is spending more than $6 billion dollars on its ALLOVER(SM)
network*, the nation's largest digital voice and data network.
"Better wireless coverage and performance is exactly what Cingular
is delivering in more places than ever before in metropolitan
Philadelphia, central and northeastern Pennsylvania and Delaware,"
said Glen Robinson, Cingular's Executive Director Network Services,
Greater Philadelphia. "We have also boosted network capacity by
approximately 30% over the last six months so that our customers
experience fewer dropped calls whether they're using their Cingular
service at home, at work or on vacation." So far this year,
Cingular has turned on more than 55 new cell sites in the Greater
Philadelphia area, including four in each of the following
Pennsylvania counties; Fulton, Monroe and York as well as three new
sites in these counties in Pennsylvania and New Jersey; Lancaster
PA, Lehigh PA, Luzerne PA, Mercer NJ, Pike PA and Wayne PA. Two new
cell sites are now on air in the following counties in
Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware; Berks PA, Burlington NJ,
Juniata PA, Kent DE, Northampton PA, Ocean NJ, and Sussex DE. One
new cell site has been added in the following counties in
Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland; Atlantic NJ, Cecil MD,
Centre PA, Chester PA, Cumberland NJ, Lackawanna PA, Middlesex NJ,
Mifflin PA, Montgomery PA, Montour PA and Northumberland PA.
Cingular's network technicians drive approximately 80,000 miles
every month throughout the greater Philadelphia area, monitoring
the company's network and its competitors. That's equivalent to
three complete trips around the earth. Nationally the company and
its third party vendors expect to log nearly 30 million miles over
the next year -- the equivalent of more than 50 round trips to the
moon. Cingular's interactive mapping tool, available at all retail
locations and by calling 1-866-CINGULAR, can answer specific
coverage questions based on a customer's address, a street
intersection, zip code, state or landmark. The service can even
estimate the likelihood of coverage in various scenarios -- inside
a building, for example. Cingular's ALLOVER network now covers more
than 270 million people. The company's EDGE network -- the fastest
national high-speed data network in America -- provides average
data connections of up to 135 kilobits per second in more than
13,000 cities and towns and in areas along nearly 40,000 miles of
highways. The company's network growth relies on advanced GSM/EDGE
technology. GSM is the world standard for wireless communication,
used by more than a billion people in 200-plus countries. Cingular
customers can make calls in more than 170 countries and access data
services in more than 70 countries. For more information about
