The couple has been using BellSouth(R) FastAccess(R) Internet Service, powered by wireless broadband technology, for more than a week. The new service transmits signals between local radio towers and a small non-line-of- sight desktop modem to offer high-speed Internet access without using a traditional phone line. "It's been great," said DeAnne Gulley. "I really don't notice a difference between this and the cable modem service we had before. We get the same high speed and even save some money." "With the University of Georgia here, Athens was a logical place for us to first offer this exciting new technology," said George Hill, vice president of product marketing for BellSouth. "Students demand even greater flexibility and affordability from their communications provider, and with this, we will be able to offer students and residents another high-speed Internet solution that fits their needs. "This is an exciting new product for all consumers and businesses within the Athens service area," he noted. Wireless broadband technology can also be used to bring high-speed Internet access to rural areas where traditional wireline broadband cannot be efficiently deployed. No wireline telephone is required. And, BellSouth offers students in Athens the ability to suspend their wireless broadband service between May and July, when many leave town for the summer. They will pay a nominal charge per month to maintain their accounts and can re-activate service at no charge when they return to Athens. Pricing will range from $24.95 to $39.95 per month, depending on the speed selected and if the customer has BellSouth wireline service. BellSouth has been testing wireless broadband since 2000. Most recently, the company conducted technical trials in Daytona and Palatka, Fla. As previously announced, BellSouth will offer wireless broadband in select Florida cities later this year.
