More Than 50 New Sites to be Added Across Tennessee and Northern Mississippi by Year-End MEMPHIS, Tenn., Sept. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- The nation's largest wireless carrier is growing its network and meeting the need for enhanced coverage in the greater Memphis area. Cingular Wireless today announced that it recently added four new cell sites in the area, ensuring West Tennessee and North Mississippi customers stay connected. These new sites are some of the more than 55 new cell sites Cingular has planned for Tennessee and Northern Mississippi before the end of the year. These new sites serve the following areas: - Shelby County, southwest of Memphis near the town of Hickory Hill, enhancing coverage for residents and travelers between Germantown and Hickory Hill. - Decatur County, northeast of Memphis, enhancing service for the town of Parsons, along Hwy. 412 between Parsons and Perryville, and along Hwy. 69 between Parsons and Jeanette. - Decatur County, extending coverage along Hwy. 412 between Lexington and Parsons. - Tate County, Miss., enhancing coverage in and around the town of Independence and the fast-growing suburbs southeast of Memphis. "These four new additions to our network are part of Cingular's plan to provide the very best possible wireless network to our customers," said Jim Thorpe, vice president and regional manager for Cingular's Tennessee and Kentucky market. "Whether you are a businessperson calling Tokyo or a farmer checking the weather forecast on your PDA, we want our customers to know they can count on Cingular." Cingular Wireless plans to spend more than $235 million on its Tennessee network before year-end, increasing coverage and capacity, building more than 50 new cell sites, adding portable generators and back-up batteries, and offering enhanced new features. Significantly, Cingular recently launched its third-generation (3G) wireless network technology in 16 major cities, with more to follow across the country by year-end, including Memphis. With 3G, customers will access information and applications at broadband speeds in the office, on the road or at home. The service-via laptop data cards or 3G- compatible phones this year-provides average mobile data connections between 400-700Kbps (kilobits per second) on the downlink and bursts to more than a megabit per second. Cingular's local investment is part of a more than $6 billion commitment to enhance and expand its ALLOVER(R) network nationwide this year.
