More Than 25 New Sites to be Added Across Kentucky and Southern Indiana by Year-End SOMERSET, Ky., Oct. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- The nation's largest wireless carrier is growing its network and meeting the need for enhanced coverage near Somerset. Cingular Wireless today announced that it recently added five new cell sites in the area, ensuring Kentucky customers stay connected. These new sites are some of the more than 25 new cell sites Cingular has planned for completion in Kentucky and Southern Indiana before the end of the year. These new sites serve the following areas: - Central and Western Pulaski County, west of Somerset off the Cumberland Parkway, providing continuing coverage along the Parkway west of Somerset, and new cellular service to areas north and south of the Parkway. - Southern Pulaski County, south of Somerset off U.S. Hwy. 27, providing new coverage between Somerset and Tateville. - Central Pulaski County, in Somerset, providing improved coverage in and around the town. - West of Somerset, near the Russell/Pulaski County line, extending coverage into Russell County. "These five new cell sites will provide both residents and visitors to the Somerset area with a better network, better coverage, and better service," said Jim Thorpe, vice president and general manager for Cingular's Tennessee and Kentucky market. "These new Somerset sites are part of our effort to bring our Kentucky customers the best wireless service and experience possible." Another component of that effort is the recent opening of the new Cingular Wireless store in Somerset at 300 Sam Walton Drive, Suite 600. The new 2,000 square foot store is located in the Tri-County Square Shopping Center. Cingular Wireless plans to spend more than $85 million on its Kentucky network before year-end, increasing coverage and capacity, building more than 25 new cell sites, adding portable generators and back-up batteries, and offering enhanced new features. Significantly, Cingular recently launched its third-generation (3G) wireless network technology in more than 110 cities and towns and more than 55 major metropolitan markets, with more to follow across the country by year-end, including Louisville. With 3G, customers will access information and applications at broadband speeds in the office, on the road or at home. The service-via laptop data cards or 3G-compatible phones this year- provides average mobile data connections between 400-700Kbps (kilobits per second) on the downlink and bursts to more than a megabit per second. Cingular's local investment is part of a more than $6 billion commitment to enhance and expand its ALLOVER(R) network nationwide this year.
