Promotion Expected To Raise Critical Funds & Increase Bone
Marrow Donations LOS ANGELES, Nov. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- PADRES Contra
El Cancer (PADRES) joins forces with Cingular Wireless to launch an
extraordinary promotion to benefit children and families fighting
childhood cancer. The campaign is a partnership between PADRES,
Cingular Wireless, Univision 34 (KMEX-TV) and Unified Western
Grocers. The primary objectives of the six- week joint effort
include raising funds for PADRES' programs through donations at
Cingular Wireless retail stores, educating the community about
childhood cancer, and motivating Latinos to donate bone marrow.
"Grappling with childhood cancer affects more than just the
patients; it affects the immediate family and the communities in
which they live," said Elvia Barboa, CEO of PADRES Contra El
Cancer. "Our unique partnership with Cingular Wireless, Univision
34 (KMEX-TV) and Unified Western Grocers provides us a powerful
platform to reach the public and get them engaged, so we can give
these children and their families more than hope. I know that 20
dollars, multiplied by hundreds, will positively impact thousands
of families." Cancer strikes approximately 1,500 children in
California annually and nearly 50 percent of these children are
Latino. Cancer remains the leading cause of death among children
under 15 years old, and second only to accidents in most age
groups. "We support PADRES and its mission wholeheartedly," said
Kelly King, Cingular Wireless vice president & general manager
for Greater Los Angeles. "Together, we have a rare opportunity to
raise awareness and funding, which will make a very real difference
in people's lives." "I first learned of PADRES when my son Carlos
was diagnosed with leukemia in July of last year," said Martha
Magallon. "During our most difficult times, PADRES helped us with
every day necessities, transportation and meal tickets, but more
important, they made us feel we were not alone." The joint
promotion includes a bone-marrow drive at Cingular's newest "state
of the art" store in Huntington Park. The drive will take place
December 1, 2006 and its goal is to recruit a substantial number of
Latino bone marrow donors. Although most children who require blood
transfusions at Children's Hospital of Los Angeles are Hispanic,
only 5 percent of the donors are Latino. The public can visit 53
participating Cingular Wireless stores and kiosks in the Los
Angeles area to make their donations. With every $20 donation,
Cingular will provide $20 in savings on select Cingular handsets or
GoPhone (with a pre-paid or post-paid activation), a voucher good
for $20 worth of groceries from local participating retailers and a
limited edition "Answer Hope's Call" Esperanza Cingular phone charm
indicating support for the program. About PADRES PADRES Contra El
