Texas Tech's Sonny Cumbie Selected as the Cingular Wireless/ABC
Sports All- America Player of the Week ATLANTA, Sept. 20
/PRNewswire/ -- Texas Tech senior quarterback Sonny Cumbie, who
helped lead the Red Raiders to their biggest come-from-behind win
in school history, has been selected as the Cingular Wireless/ABC
Sports All- America Player of the Week. Cumbie was nominated after
throwing for 441 yards and four touchdowns in the Red Raider's
70-35 victory over Texas Christian. Texas Tech trailed 21-0 early
in the second quarter before reeling off 56 unanswered points.
After three games, Cumbie leads the NCAA in total offense (446
yards/game) and passing (38 completions/game). He is the second
consecutive quarterback to win the award, following Purdue's Kyle
Orton, who claimed last week's honor. Cumbie was one of four
candidates for the All-America Player of the Week, who are selected
by a panel of ABC Sports and ESPN college football analysts, led by
John Saunders. The other finalists this week included Michigan wide
receiver Braylon Edwards (eight receptions, 130 yards, two
touchdowns), UCLA running back Maurice Drew (323 yards rushing,
five touchdowns) and Miami (FL) wide receiver Devin Hester (two
punt returns for touchdowns). Cumbie was named the Player of the
Week after receiving the most fan votes via wireless text messaging
and online at ESPN.com (keyword: cingular). He will be awarded a
commemorative Cingular/ABC Sports All-America Player of the Week
plaque. The Cingular Wireless/ABC Sports All-America Player of the
Week marks the first time in college football history that fans can
make the call on who they think deserves to be the All-America
Player of the Week. Each week the candidates are announced after
the last college game each Saturday during ESPN's "College GameDay
Final." Fans have from that time until 8 p.m. Eastern Time on
Sunday to text-message their votes. The winner is announced during
the 11 p.m. Eastern Time broadcast of ESPN "SportsCenter" each
Sunday. Here's how fans can vote in the Cingular/ABC Sports
