Texas Tech's Sonny Cumbie Selected as the Cingular Wireless/ABC Sports All- America Player of the Week ATLANTA, Sept. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Texas Tech senior quarterback Sonny Cumbie, who helped lead the Red Raiders to their biggest come-from-behind win in school history, has been selected as the Cingular Wireless/ABC Sports All- America Player of the Week. Cumbie was nominated after throwing for 441 yards and four touchdowns in the Red Raider's 70-35 victory over Texas Christian. Texas Tech trailed 21-0 early in the second quarter before reeling off 56 unanswered points. After three games, Cumbie leads the NCAA in total offense (446 yards/game) and passing (38 completions/game). He is the second consecutive quarterback to win the award, following Purdue's Kyle Orton, who claimed last week's honor. Cumbie was one of four candidates for the All-America Player of the Week, who are selected by a panel of ABC Sports and ESPN college football analysts, led by John Saunders. The other finalists this week included Michigan wide receiver Braylon Edwards (eight receptions, 130 yards, two touchdowns), UCLA running back Maurice Drew (323 yards rushing, five touchdowns) and Miami (FL) wide receiver Devin Hester (two punt returns for touchdowns).
