BellSouth Names Marc Gary General Counsel; Elected Company Officer Will oversee all corporate legal matters ATLANTA, Sept. 27 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- BellSouth Corporation (NYSE:BLS) today announced that Marc Gary, currently vice president and associate general counsel, has been promoted to general counsel and elected as an officer of BellSouth, effective Oct. 1. In his current position, Gary has been responsible for the company's litigation, antitrust, labor and employment, bankruptcy, compliance matters and chief legal counsel for BellSouth's wholesale operation. As general counsel for BellSouth, Gary will now oversee all legal matters relating to the corporation, reporting directly to BellSouth Chairman and CEO Duane Ackerman. During his 20-year tenure at Mayer, Brown & Platt, Gary litigated and tried civil and criminal cases in state and federal courts. In 1990, Gary took a two-year leave of absence to serve as associate independent counsel in the Office of Independent Counsel, representing the United States in the investigation and prosecution of alleged criminal wrongdoing at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. In 2002, Corporate Counsel magazine named Gary to their top 10 list of attorneys likely to be named general counsel at a Fortune 500 company within five years.
