MARKET OVERVIEW Overseas markets are showing some gains on thin volumes, some of which is attributable to Corpus Christi day; a holiday observed in parts of Europe. Currently nine of the 15 markets that we track are positive with a total cumulative average return of plus 0.206 percent. The Bank of England (BOE) raised its key Repo Rate by 25 basis points to 4.50 percent. The governing board feels that inflationary pressures are likely to build thanks to household spending and the global economic recovery. Spare capacity is starting to narrow and the labor market has begun to tighten, also contributing to inflationary tendencies. The news seems to have had minimal impact on the equity markets as the FTSE 100 index is holding fairly flat. Before the start of the regular session of trade today, Initial Jobless Claims for the week ending June 5 are expected to have declined by 4,000, coming atop the prior week's 6,000 decline. Sharing the same time slot, an indicator on the potential for inflation, May Import Prices are expected to have ballooned by 0.8 percent, following April's more modest 0.2 percent rise. No doubt energy prices have had a heavy hand in this anticipated rise, so watch the readings out of the non-fuel components for a more accurate gauge on inflation. At 10:00 a.m., Federal Reserve Chairman Greenspan makes his second appearance of the week as he testifies before U.S. Senate Banking committee on his re-nomination. Let's see if we get some clarification of the apparently dichotomous concepts uttered earlier in the week, "measured pace" of rate increases and "the FOMC is prepared to do what is required to fulfill our obligations to achieve the maintenance of price stability so as to ensure maximum sustainable economic growth." On the earnings calendar, keep an eye out for National Semiconductor, they have a tendency to pull a mid-session surprise release of their report. Two weeks ago, it granted Merial an exclusive license to use its DNA technology to develop a cancer vaccine for animals. Vical received an initial lump sum payment from Merial, and will continue receiving payments and royalties as the drug is produced and sold. In addition, Vical stands to gain a significant revenue and stock boost later this year, thanks to the successful conclusion of Phase II clinical trials of Allovectin-7 -- the company's new melanoma treatment. The drug initially appears to be both safe and effective, and will be registered for FDA approval in the second half of the year. Finally, Vical is also helping fight the battle against bioterrorism -- specifically, through a new DNA-based anthrax vaccine. The company gained a major boost recently when it gained the support of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases for Phase I trials in a few weeks. Erin Beale, investment editor at Taipan's Red Zone group also believes the vaccine could stand to gain federal funding under Project BioShield -- the $5.6 billion government effort to protect America from bioterrorism -- a move that could be extremely lucrative for Vical.
