Rep. Mike Doyle's opening statement--"we will legislate to stop this"--sounds ominous for the big tech companies.

Mr. Doyle, referring to the spread of misinformation on social media platforms, is the chairman of the House subcommittee on communications and technology and thus has jurisdiction over the companies and their current legal protections.

Mr. Doyle (D., Pa.) criticized the social media platforms over their role in the events of Jan. 6 and also their role in promoting views of vaccine opponents.

"You have the means" to stop misinformation, "but time after time you are picking engagement and profit over the health and safety" of users and the public, he said.
