The University of Maryland Medical System Selects Bowne Global
Solutions to Provide Interpretation Services for Patients NEW YORK,
July 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Bowne Global Solutions (BGS), a
leading provider of interpretation and translation services,
announced today that it has signed a contract with the University
of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) in Baltimore, Maryland to provide
all foreign language interpretation to hospital patients in person
or over the phone. Under the terms of the three-year agreement, BGS
will provide the interpretations using certified interpreters, who
collectively are fluent in 30 languages, to the Medical System's
six Baltimore-area hospitals. Limited English Proficient (LEP)
patients of these hospitals most frequently request interpreters
for Spanish, Korean, Vietnamese, Mandarin and Russian. BGS
interpreters are available for LEP patients who have a variety of
medical needs, including those with scheduled hospital visits,
those delivering babies and patients who come to the emergency
department. Depending on the medical situation of the patient, the
interpreters may conduct face-to- face interpretations at the
hospital bedside or they may translate remotely by telephone. "Our
need for foreign language interpretation has been growing, and BGS
Interpretations Services will enhance our ability to communicate
with those patients who do not speak English. Clear communication
with our patients is an important component in providing excellent
care," said Maurice McCreary, Director of Customer Service at the
University of Maryland Medical Center, which is one of the six
hospitals in the University of Maryland Medical System. "Working
with BGS gives us access to professional interpreters who have been
tested and certified. They can translate complicated medical
concepts in English and many other languages, including some rare
dialects," added McCreary. "The University of Maryland Medical
System has proven its leadership position in the medical community
by adapting to the rapidly changing needs of its foreign
language-speaking patients," said Deane Dayton, Senior Vice
President of BGS Interpretation Services. "Providing best-in-class
interpretation services in a variety of foreign languages
demonstrates UMMS's commitment to high quality customer service and
patient care." The six hospitals within the private, non-profit
University of Maryland Medical System that will be accessing BGS
Interpretation Services are: The University of Maryland Medical
Center, Maryland General Hospital, North Arundel Hospital,
University Specialty Hospital, Kernan Hospital and Mt. Washington
Pediatric Hospital. The Medical System's hospitals admit more than
60,000 patients each year. About Bowne Global Solutions Bowne
