Billionaire Carlos Slim is evaluating taking Mexican restaurant
and retail chain Sanborns to New York City, an aide to the tycoon
told Reuters in an interview published Wednesday.
"What we are looking at is the possibility of opening a first
Sanborns in Manhattan," said Arturo Elias Ayub, who is also a
spokesman for Slim. "There is nothing defined yet."
Sanborns, a unit of conglomerate Grupo Carso SAB (GPOVY,
GCARSO.MX), is ubiquitous in Mexico, offering shoppers a mix of
goods, services and food.
Slim, ranked by Forbes magazine as the world's richest person,
is a baseball fan who travels occasionally to New York to watch the
Yankees play. He also owns about 6.9% of the New York Times Co.'s
(NYT) Class A shares. Earlier this year he bought, along with other
investors, a landmark building near Central Park.
