Nominees are made by AuntMinnie.com members, with winners selected through a vote by AuntMinnie's expert panel of editors and radiology professionals.

The Minnies recognize radiology and medical imaging excellence prior to the annual Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) meeting held in Chicago. According to AuntMinnie.com, its founder, radiologist Dr. Phillip Berman, coined the name for the award based on a quote by Dr. Ben Felson, a radiologist at the University of Cincinnati. In laymen's terms Dr. Felson's words could be summed up as, "If it looks like your Aunt Minnie, then it's your Aunt Minnie." Meaning findings are so specific and convincing no other diagnosis could be made. For the 2011 awards, there were 166 candidates in 14 categories, with Poiesis prevailing as Best New Radiology Vendor.
