Sales at Volkswagen AG's (VOW.XE) commercial vehicles unit rose 18% on the year in the first eight months to 269,800 vehicles and the automaker aims for a new sales record this year, the company said Tuesday.

The unit's head, Wolfgang Schreiber, told reporters at the sidelines of the international commercial vehicles show in the Northern Germany city of Hanover he was "optimistic" about surpassing the sales record of 447,000 vehicles reached in 2008.

In the first six months of the year, the division's vehicle sales rose to around 159,000 from 135,000 vehicles in the same period last year. Half-year revenue increased tu EUR3.54 billion from EUR2.66 billion.

Europe's largest automaker by sales is considering a reorganization of its commercial vehicles division and speculation has been swirling in recent months that it might weave the unit into its core VW passenger car brand to reap cost synergies. The division produces light commercial vehicles such as the Crafter, the Multivan and the new Amarok pickup.

Volkswagen sold its Brazilian heavy-truck operations to MAN SE (MAN.XE) last year. Volkswagen is MAN's largest shareholder with a 29.9% stake. Volkswagen is aiming to forge a European truck alliance between thr Swedish Scania AB (SCV-A.SK) heavy-truck brand it owns and MAN.
