Porsche Automobil Holding SE's (PAH3.XE) sportscar unit said Monday global sales in April rose 7.2% on the year to 12,588 cars, fueled by the new-generation 911 model.

"With a new best performance for customer deliveries in April, we are on track for our (growth targets until) 2018," Porsche sales chief Bernhard Maier said in a statement.

Porsche aims to almost double annual sales volume to 200,000 by 2018, according to previous statements.

In the January-to-April period, Porsche's global sales were up 12.6% compared with the same period last year at 43,141 cars.

The Porsche 911 model accounted for 3,123 car sales last month, up 40% year-on-year. The Cayenne sports-utility-vehicle remained Porsche's bestselling model with 6,037 vehicle sales in April.
