FRANKFURT-- Porsche AG, the sports-car maker owned by Volkswagen AG, said on Wednesday that it has appointed Oliver Blume as its new chief executive, replacing Matthias Müller.

Mr. Blume, who has been production chief at Porsche for nearly three years, will take office on October 1.

The appointment is part of a wider management shake-up at the Volkswagen group, which is currently embroiled in a emissions-rigging scandal that has resulted in personnel changes and suspensions. Last week, Volkswagen appointed Mr. Müller to lead the group, two days after his predecessor Martin Winterkorn resigned.

The announcement of Mr. Blume's appointment confirms a report by The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday.

Porsche also named Chief Financial Officer Lutz Meschke as deputy CEO, and appointed North American Chief Detlev von Platen to the board, responsible for sales and marketing.

Mr. Blume, aged 47, began his career as a trainee at Audi AG after earning an engineering degree at the Braunschweig University of Technology. He has also held posts at Volkswagen and its subsidiary SEAT.

Key shareholders at Volkswagen meet later on Wednesday to discuss developments in the emissions crisis, which erupted after U.S. environmental authorities revealed that the car maker had intentionally installed software to make vehicles perform better in tests than on the road.

That software is in around 11 million vehicles manufactured by five of Volkswagen's 12 brands, Volkswagen has said, but not in Porsche cars.
