FRANKFURT--New car registrations fell in Germany in July, federal motor vehicle agency KBA said Tuesday, with two fewer working days contributing to the decline.

July registrations fell 3.9% to 278,866 new cars. The decline in registrations, a mirror of sales, followed a gain of 8% in June. In the first seven months, they were up 5.4% to 2.01 million, KBA said.

Europe's car market has been on an upswing this year, with the region rebounding from the low volumes triggered by the financial crisis. But analysts have said they expected growth to slow in the second half.

New car registrations in Germany, Europe's largest car market, are expected to rise 3% to about 3.3 million cars, according to German auto industry group VDA.

Elsewhere in Europe, French new car registrations fell 9.6% in July, while Italian registrations were up 2.9%.

Among the car manufacturers, Volkswagen AG (VOW.XE) retained the largest market share at 20%, but sales of its cars were 13% lower than in July 2014.
