Canada has banned the use of WeChat and Kaspersky applications
on government-issued mobile devices.
Canada's Treasury Board department, which is in charge of
day-to-day government administration, on Monday said officials
determined the applications present "an unacceptable level of risk
to privacy and security."
The ban takes immediate effect, the government said.
WeChat, an instant-messaging platform, is owned by China-based
Tencent Holdings.
The Federal Trade Commission last year said equipment and
services from Russia-based Kaspersky posed a threat to national
security.
Earlier this year, Canada banned the TikTok app from
government-issued devices, also citing security risks, following
the lead of U.S. and European authorities.
